La Conner, Birch Bay, Aberdeen WA

Saturday, July 5, 2014 Aberdeen, WA

Well, this was not part of the plan.
Front row seat for fireworks,  Walmart parking lot, Aberdeen, WA

We were supposed to be here:
Our condo is in here someplace, but I can't quite remember which one it is

Watching them play on the beach on a sunny afternoon:
Birch Bay, afternoon at low tide
Or sitting on our patio drinking coffee on a quiet morning:
High tide, the following morning

But no.

July 4th picnic in the rig. Thankfully there is rum in the Coke.
The plan was for us to be in our condo July 1st with paint rollers in hand by July 4th. Instead here we are, having a 4th of July picnic in our rig in a Walmart parking lot in Aberdeen, Washington. Someplace which is not our condo.
Our property manager apologizes profusely for the confusion. It was his confusion, since he told us that the tenant would be out "by the end of the month". Since we were talking with him in June that meant, to us, July. When we called him to meet him to get the keys to the apartment he was all surprised and said the tenant had until the end of July. When did this happen? Too angry to find out or care. Peg says I did it just to get out of painting. It's true I hate painting, but not that much. Besides, I'm not getting out of it, I'm just delaying it.

My second impulse, after not having any drywall around to punch a hole in, was to drive straight down to Flagstaff. But a better idea occurred. Since we had always planned to explore the Oregon coast after we got settled we reasoned that it made sense to do it now with our free month and while the weather was still nice. That's what brought us here to Aberdeen, on the way to a campsite not far from here, but which won't have any openings until after the 4th.

By the way, fireworks are legal here in WA at certain times before and after the 4th. Consequently there are mini explosions going on all around us all the time. Must be what living in Iraq is like. Without the fear of imminent death, of course. The fireworks displays here are awesome, with about 6 different events going on in a big circle around where we're parked. Who knew WA had so much money to send up in smoke?

She won't like this picture either (he used that darn wide angle lens again!pc)

We plan to move on down the coast until we're about level with Reno/Tahoe, then cut across to see that area and on down to LV and Flag. While we're there we'll visit and take care of medical and dental work that needs to be done.

Another idea presented itself, and this may happen. The idea is to send Peg by herself, or with her willing friend, back up to WA early enough to get the condo ready for my delivery of a truck full of our worldly goodness. While she's there she can paint and get the process started, at least, for replacing carpeting and getting plans for a kitchen face-lift in place, if not completed.

Meanwhile I'll fly out to North Carolina, meet my sister and together we'll drive the Vesta back from the consignment lot there to a more winter weather friendly one in Phoenix. That is assuming they haven't sold it by then, and past history with them suggests they won't. Libel laws won't let me speculate in print.

So that is our current situation. This was supposed to be a final blog post, a "So Long and Thanks for all the Fish" kind of post. (Hat tip to Douglas Adams.)

But not so. You'll have to put up with me a little bit longer as we work our way back to Flagstaff. Then I will be quiet and you will have earned a well deserved rest.

It will seem fitting, though, to end this where the journey started. Thanks to all those who have expressed appreciation for the blog. It has truly been a surprise how many have been reading (it's in the halves of dozens! I wouldn't have even expected my mother to read had she been alive. But she doesn't really count since she could barely use a TV remote much less a computer, God Bless her.)

Let's see. If I send Peg up there first, and come up later, I may yet get out of painting.
