Texas Book Festival, Austin Texas

The stars were aligned favorably for us yesterday. Peg was done with her conference just in time for us to get to the cooking demo by the Beekman Boys at the book festival. Beekman is the name of the farm they bought, not their names. Anyway, Peg's sister Pat is a big fan, and Peg is also a fan. The Beekman's, as they are known, came to prominence as contestants and ultimately winners of The Amazing Race a season or so ago. The have since gone on to fame and fortune as cookbook authors, TV show personalities and promoters of a small farm, back to the land movement. Locavores.

The whole purpose of rushing to get there was to buy their new book and get it signed by them so Peg could surprise her sister with a copy for Christmas. But she had to call her sister to find out which book of theirs she didn't own. So no surprise. But she still gets a signed book.

The boys were very gracious in giving their thanks to Central Market, a division of H.E.B. a large local grocery chain here. It seems Central Market was the first large retailer to offer them assistance in putting their brand of tomato sauce on the shelves. The sauce, which is called Mortgage Lifter, came from heirloom seeds which a previous farmer had grown. The tomatoes were supposedly so good that the sale of them allowed that farmer to pay off his mortgage, hence the name. The Beekmans donate 25% of the profits to help small farms.

Josh tells the history of the sauce.
After that we spent the rest of the afternoon browsing the stalls. I bought 2 cookbooks, which I promised myself I wouldn't do. One, a small book, is a keepsake of Austin. Breakfast tacos are a very big deal here and this little book is all about them. The other is all about Smoke. Figure out how to do this in an RV.
Our haul.
And of course we ate. We tried the Peached Tortilla
Their brisket tacos and smothered sweet potato fries, both excellent.

  2. CC, laundry is fun here in Austin as it is right next door to a wonderful Hispanic grocery store with a grill so we have breakfast tacos/coffee/pan dulces with the laundry. How can you not like that. It is the next best thing to a 'suds (beer) and duds'. We haven't found that one for laundry day...yet.
